Introduction to Archery
I started shooting with Waterside Archers back in 1982 after having spoken with their club coach at a leisure and recreation fair. I stayed with the club for a couple of years but then due to family commitments stopped shooting, restarting again seven years later in 1989 with my enthusiastic son, where for the next few years we shot with some success at all the target competitions around the southern counties using recurve bows. I have always had a thing about `bows and arrows`, even as a kid I was always playing the part of a Red Indian in our games of ‘Cowboys and Indians’. As time went by and my son grew up and became interested in other things such as wine, women and song I started to tire of the pressures of competitive target shooting and, looking for a change, I joined a couple of others who had started messing about with longbows. This was a completely new game and not only satisfied my archery interests but also got me interested in the historical aspects of our sport. Now with my fellow comrades in arms we attend and cover most disciplines of archery, such as re-enactments, field, flight, clout, speed, roving and of course target. During this time I have amassed many archery collectables as well as a variety of bows ranging in styles from my original recurve bow, an American flat bow, a Mongolian bow, horse bows and of course several longbows.
