Introduction to Archery
My first experience of archery was during a
school activities week based in the West Country. The instructor kitted me up
to shoot left-handed (because that's what I write with), gave me three arrows
and told me to shoot at the target. Filled with confidence
I promptly missed with every single arrow! Going back to the instructor I asked if could I shoot right-handed
instead? "Of course you can" replied the instructor confusedly, changing this leather thingy from my right arm
and replacing it to my left. I sauntered back to the line
and thankfully on the next 'round' managed to hit, albeit wildly, the target
with all three arrows! Of all the activities we did that week, archery remained as one of my favourites.
Ten years later a work colleague happened to mention a local club where he was a member and invited me to attend
their beginners' course. Suffice to say I enjoyed every minute of it and I joined up immediately afterwards.
Since then I've shot a variety of bow types and disciplines, and although I
now shoot the English Longbow I still prefer my jet black, 12 year old, flatbow. In between my time
shooting on the line I also attained the Leader and Assistant Coach qualifications which opened up an
equally fascinating aspect to my ongoing study of archery.
